“Europe said that the 2nd World War would not happen again; prove it”, says Ukrainian minister

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba criticized this Saturday (5) the delay of European countries and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in giving greater military and diplomatic support to the country in the fight against the Russian invasion, and he also urged the international community to urgently pressurize Russian President Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire.

“All European leaders in ceremonies around the world repeated several times that they did not allow a second World War to be repeated (…). If you say something like this will never happen again, prove what you have said in the past and show that the violence in Ukraine can be stopped before it becomes an even more indefensible war,” Kuleba said.

The Ukrainian chancellor also once again reinforced the country’s willingness to join the European Union, including as a way to protect itself from the current conflict.

“It would send a very clear message to Russia that the European Union sees us as part of them and that anything Putin wants to do will not stop the Ukrainian people from being part of the European Union,” he said.

Kuleba also said it was frustrating that NATO refused to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, I must say that due to the decision [da Otan] of not establishing a no-fly zone, more civilians will be killed by Russian strike forces, and more blood will be shed.”

The chancellor spoke at a news conference on Saturday after meeting US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the Ukrainian-Poland border to discuss Western efforts to support Ukraine and isolate Russia, in hopes of ending the 10 day war.

He said he expects the results of the meeting to be implemented in the coming days, including new sanctions on Russia and more weapons for Ukraine.

In a televised address on Saturday, Ukraine’s foreign minister reaffirmed that his country wanted stronger sanctions against Russia.

These include, among others, banning Russian bank Sberbank from Swift, closing European ports to Russian ships, closing Russia’s access to cryptocurrency and halting purchases of Russian oil,” Kuleba said.

During the message, Kuleba praised the “admirable” courage of “peaceful protesters” in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, who “demonstrated in front of armed Russian invaders”, telling them that “they are Ukrainians and their city belongs to Ukraine”. ”.

“The message of the heroic Ukrainian people is simple,” he said. “Russians, go home. You are in a foreign land where nobody needs you. And nobody welcomes them with flowers. Putin, leave Ukraine alone. You will not win this war”, emphasized Kuleba during the brief message.
