Tuesday 5 November It’s American election day. In a year in which half the world’s population has been called to vote, it is now the United States’ turn. In the US we traditionally vote every four years in November. These elections see a woman on the field for the second time, Kamala Harris, candidate after Hillary Clinton’s defeat 8 years ago, against the man who beat the former Secretary of State, Donald Trump. Above all, it is the first presidential election after the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, after the attempt by those who supported Trump to subvert the outcome of the polls.
Who are the candidates
There has always been only one Republican candidate: Donald Trump. The tycoon found himself facing opponents who have never been such on the Republican side. Not even the many cases in which he was involved proved to be obstacles, including those for which he was convicted such as the Stormy Daniels case.
This is the portrait of Ohio Senator JD Vance, Republican candidate for vice president.
On the other hand, there were two candidates. The first was the current president Joe Biden who, however, appeared to be in clear and ever-increasing difficulty and whose step back was requested by leaders and representatives of his party. After him came the natural alternative: his vice president Kamala Harris.
The Democratic candidate has chosen Tim Walz as her deputy. That’s who the governor of Minnesota is.
The electoral campaign
Without exclusion of guilt. This is how the election campaign has been from the beginning. From Trump’s definition of Kamala Harris as a childless cat lady, to incumbent President Biden’s gaffe in calling his Republican opponent’s voters trash.
There has been an attack on everything in this election campaign. Former President Trump was shot in the ear during a rally in Pennsylvania. and shortly thereafter she was killed. Donald Trump has been transferred to hospital and is doing well

The endorsements
The most anticipated and the one that has caused the most discussion in the USA and beyond is Taylor Swift’s endorsement in favor of Kamala Harris. The Democratic candidate was then supported by most of the stars of music and cinema, including the former governor of California Arnold Schwazenegger and one of the daughters of former president George W. Bush.

The strongest of the voices in favor of Trump is that of Elon Musk who went so far as to create a million dollar lottery for Republican voters.

How to vote
In the USA there is no direct electoral system. Citizens do not vote directly for one of the two presidential candidates, but for one of their representatives. These are the so-called electors who will vote for the election of the president. There are big voters in everything 538. Whoever has the majority of votes in a state, even just one more consensus than the opponent, gets everyone the big voters of this. Said quoting Abba The winner takes it allwinner takes all.
It happened that the candidate with the most popular votes did not reach the presidency because he did not have the greatest number of electors which vary from state to state based on the resident population. In the 2000 the Democrat Al Gore had half a million more popular votes than the Republican George W. Bush who however obtained, thanks to just 500 votes of difference, Florida and its numerous electors.
They are called Swing states, swing states that are not historically Republican (Texas) or Democratic (California). If Florida was decisive for Bush Jr., in 1976 it was Ohio that brought Jimmy Carter to the White House. Right from the Democratic or Republican position of Ohio pollsters understand the national trend.
First of all need register that is, register on the lists of those who want to vote. Each state then has its own form of voting and its own ballot. There is the possibility to vote in advancewith polling stations already open in the days preceding the election and also by post.
The precedent of the 2020 elections
In 2020, outgoing President Donald Trump, Republican candidate, refused to recognize the outcome of the votes and the victory of his challenger, Biden. He announced legal appeals and reported fraud which found no evidence. This attitude, which many think will be repeated this year, led to the assault on the Capitol on January 6, in the days before the swearing-in of the new US president.
