The French government has lowered its growth outlook for 2023 but sees no need to revise its budget deficit target as a result, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said on Tuesday.
France’s economy is now expected to slow from an estimated 2.5% expansion this year to 1% next year, below the 1.4% pace expected earlier, Le Maire told reporters as he outlined key forecasts underpinning the bill. budget for 2023, which will be presented later this month.
“We are maintaining a positive growth forecast, but we are adjusting to (reflect) the reality of the international situation, energy market tensions and the difficulties of our trading partners,” said Le Maire.
Despite the weaker outlook, he said abandoning the country’s plans to reduce the public sector deficit from an estimated 5% of economic output this year to less than 3% in 2027 was not an option.
