Gabriele Vagnato: “Self-irony, what a weapon”

Specialty: behind the scenes. In the most delicate moment, the one in which you enter the scene, Gabriele Vagnato wreaks havoc with inappropriate and irreverent questions. Result? The tension subsides and the artists allow themselves a smile. The scheme will also work for LOVE MI, the great live concert organized in Piazza Duomo by Fedez on Tuesday 28 June starting at 19, broadcast live from Italy 1. On the stage Elenoire Casalegno and Aurora Ramazzotti will present many artists (from Ghali to Dargen D ‘ Amico, from Tananai to the return of J-Ax) who will perform for charity in favor of TOG – TOGETHER TO GO (non-profit center of excellence in the rehabilitation of children suffering from complex neurological diseases). Gabriele, young and very popular content creator (3.8 million on TikTok, 1.1 million on Instagram, 778,000 on YouTube)will be a special correspondent behind the scenes and in the audience. «Live on Italia 1, the television I grew up with. Thanks mom for always denying me pay TV! The (rear) stage of the Duomo is the consecration of a path that has undergone an important acceleration in recent months. Thanks to Andrea Delogu, who wanted Gabri as a regular guest in the TONICA program and then as co-host in San Pietro at the end of April.

Everything starts in the family. It is the living proof that Sundays are served by relatives …
“We Calabrians have a mission: a parterre of relatives to be satisfied in some way every Sunday. So, as a joke, I started making imitations of parents, uncles and cousins at my grandmother’s house. The one I was best at was my mother: particularly hypochondriac. I saw that I liked to exasperate people’s characteristics and predisposed them to self-irony. It was my aunt who told me: why don’t you publish the videos online? I never had the courage. But in 2014 I opened a youtube channel hoping that someone would notice me. I was 13 years old ».

When did you realize it was working?
“I would say in the last few months. When I started out into the mainstream this was not perceived as a profession. The decision to move to Milan was fundamental ».

We arrive at Dream Hit, the social concert in 2020. Why did Fedez think of her?
«I arrive in Milan in 2019, just before the pandemic. It is a city that gives you a lot but makes you suffer a little, at first you feel alone, you see that you don’t really have friendships. I decided to focus on what I wanted to do. This format comes out of the cylinder and then goes to my channels: it is the query. Basically it is quite the opposite of what you do in an interview. I don’t try to put the guest at ease on the contrary, I treat him with fish in the face and I always make him feel in trouble. The format takes hold and after a few months I find this offer to do interviews with the singers who participated in this concert, including Fedez and Achille Lauro, and it was the first incredible experience, a direct of about 2 hours. It was very formative: for the first time I went out of my patterns and out of the comfort zone of my audience on social media ».

Speaking of interviews: why Gianluca Vacchi?
“After four seasons of the Interrogation, I want to change and last year it occurs to me to start shooting things around the world. The idea is to photograph the reality of social media. So I start to select a series of social types in the black hole of Tik Tok and Instagram: from those who scrounge the holidays to the couple who are falsely engaged to make gossip. I start to get passionate about these characters because I don’t know if they are real or if they are modern cartoons. This is how the interview with Vacchi was born: I find an amazingly comical man who gets up at 6 to go to the hyperbaric chamber or who, an ultra-millionaire, tells you that money does not bring happiness ».

In 2018 they offer her a book My life is bad luck, it will be for the next one!. Wasn’t it a bit early?
“The books were a sort of discovery for publishers, anyone with a bit of numbers on social media was offered to make a book. I was 17: I criticize myself a little, but I did it for a sort of merchandising. I was not and am not a novelist. But I want to say one thing: 80% of the books you see online are made by ghostwriters, but in my case I didn’t want to have others write them. I thank De Agostini for giving me the opportunity to write it myself ».

Then there was the behind the scenes for TikTok in Sanremo: there he met Andrea Delogu
«Everyone told me: go to Sanremo because there is another festival outside, an incredible world. It was true. In those days I received an interview proposal from Rai Radio2 and I know Andrea. It is a special meeting. After about a week Andrea calls me back and invites me to participate as a regular guest at Tonica. The program, on Rai 2 in the late evening, spoke a lot to my generation, with a very web language which is something that TV has been missing for a long time. From there it all started ».

Also the day in April in St. Peter’s with the Pope?
“Yup. One day he says to me: Gabri would you like to have this event in front of the Pope? There is Blanco, there are 50,000 boys and I lead you and then if you like, do a piece. I was left with the Pope: I asked her for a moment to realize. I will never thank her enough. For me, St. Peter represents the most important square in the world but beyond faith. Our story was born there. I lived it as a challenge and as compensation behind closed doors, all no, all the people who tell you “you can’t speak because you are 20” “-

Do you have a model of comedy that inspires you?
“I really like American comedians. I think of Kevin Hart, for example, because their comedy stems from self-irony which is a crazy tool. I really like the young Chiambretti, but also Teo Mammuccari ».

How does Gabriele Vagnato live off the web?
«I tend to be dissatisfied, I live life as a challenge and I am always projected towards the future. I really hope to stop and relax sooner or later. But I’m not a fool who stays locked in the studio all day. I’m curious and I try to tune in to the emotions of others ».
