Guarulhos international airport is the busiest in Brazil. In August, more than 3.7 million passengers passed through there, almost 2.5 million on domestic flights and 1.2 million on international flights, according to the website maintained by GRU Airport.
Security
In March, an international drug trafficking scheme led to the unfair arrest of two Brazilian women in Germany, who had the identification of their suitcases changed in Guarulhos and placed in luggage containing cocaine. Even though they were innocent, they were detained in the European country for 38 days.
In July, the Federal Police launched the second stage of Operation Collateral and arrested 17 people. Among them, some bosses of the drug trafficking scheme.
They are accused of transporting 126 kilos of cocaine from Brazil to Europe illegally since last year.
The federal government also launched the “Aeroportos+Seguros” program, which foresees an investment of R$40 million to increase security in Guarulhos.
Plans include an increase in the number of cameras, identification with an individual access key to the baggage system in Terminal 3 (international) and new X-ray equipment, among other measures.
