The incident was revealed user under the pseudonym SomaXBT, researching threats in the Web3 sector. Lykke management admitted that last week, on June 4, the exchange’s infrastructure suffered a cyber attack, as a result of which the trading platform suffered losses exceeding $22 million.
Lykke technical support assured that it immediately disabled the affected systems to reduce the risk of losing client funds. The exchange team noted that security violations have been carefully studied and experts are working to eliminate them.
Lykke did not say the exact reason for the hack, but assured customers of its strong financial position, namely the presence of strong reserves and a diversified portfolio. Now the exchange has stopped withdrawing funds and making deposits, without specifying the timing of the resumption of operations. Lykke’s website states that the platform will notify users when it is ready to proceed.
“Customer funds are safe and will be fully returned to them. We conducted an internal investigation and identified the IP address of the attacker who stole crypto assets,” the platform said in a statement.
Let us recall that in May the Japanese exchange DMM Bitcoin also suffered from a major hack. The attackers stole 4,502.9 BTC worth $305 million. To pay compensation to clients, the exchange will raise 50 billion yen ($321 million) from affiliated companies.
