The dead were Ukrainian, German, French and Croatian tourists who were returning to a campsite in the Marghera area, just outside Venice. This morning, the city’s prosecutor’s office – in which mourning was declared today – began an investigation into the causes of this terrible accident. To ascertain whether it was a breakdown of the vehicle or a sudden health problem of the driver that caused him to fall on the railway tracks of Mestre.
According to the first results of the investigations and as reported by the Athens Agency, the driver (a 40-year-old Italian, who lost his life) does not seem to have tried to brake while the bus was on the viaduct.
The intercity bus, which was a hybrid (it had natural gas engines, but also electric ones), was immediately engulfed in flames. Many passengers were found charred by the firefighters who rushed to the scene of the accident, along with over forty first aid ambulances.
The relatives of the victims are currently arriving in Venice for the difficult process of identifying their loved ones.
