“I will never understand”, says mother after death of 4-year-old son in hospital in RJ

A 4-year-old boy, identified as Leonel Lengruber, died at Raul Sertã Hospital, in Nova Nova Friburgo, Serrana Region of Rio de Janeiro, last Sunday (8). According to the boy’s mother, Lorrayne Silibri, her son’s death was due to various medical negligence on the part of the hospital.

In a report to CNN she said that the boy was admitted to the health unit because she noticed that her son was a little “prostrate”. Lorrayne also said that people close to the child began to notice that he was very tired and decided to seek medical help.

Initially, Leonel was admitted to an Emergency Care Unit. He did not continue with the care at the scene, as he was advised to take a blood test and an x-ray, but one of the devices was broken. The family then went to Raul Sertã Hospital.

“I heard that the x-ray was broken and the doctor said that he would need to do an x-ray and a blood test to find out what he had, because he was sweating cold, he was pale, he didn’t want to eat properly and who knew the my son, I knew that my son ate very well, he was a very active child, very happy, very talkative”.

At the unit, the woman reported everything that was happening and heard from the doctors that there was no need to do the tests. Only one lung auscultation was performed. The professionals said that the boy only had a little nasal discharge, prescribed some medication and released him.

Lorrayne, realizing her son’s situation, asked for help again. The child underwent the tests that had been requested and one of the doctors said that Leonel’s hospitalization would be necessary, as one of the boy’s lungs was “filled with” secretions. From then on, the mother says that a “nightmare” began.

“My son even ate, but he ate little, he only drank water all the time. When it was early Thursday, his father stayed with him so I could go to work. He said he just wanted to eat a piece of pear, half a cookie and vomited. From then on, I only drank water, lots of water. I insisted that he eat, I did some little things and sometimes he even ate, but he was becoming very prostrate”.

The mother says that after that, she started calling the hospital team frequently to look at the boy, but the days went by and only the same procedures were carried out.

“She (nurse) just measured, saturation, fever and said that he was fine and I saw that my son was not well. I knew he wasn’t well, a mother always knows when her child isn’t well because otherwise, I wouldn’t even be there in the hospital.”

Lorrayne, called the unit’s emergency department, as her son was only getting worse. A doctor examined Leonel and said that he had an atypical condition and that she suspected whooping cough. The child and mother were placed in a room and the boy received medication through an access. The mother reports that the child did not react well and immediately began to feel sick.

“It was horrible. I got up with him, she asked to change just his blouse, which was vomiting, and put him on the chair, so he rolled his eyes and his mouth turned blue. The nurse took him into the venipuncture room and I ran out screaming for help throughout the hospital.”

The mother points out that she was completely ignored and believes that if the hospital’s attitude had been different, Leonel would be alive.

“They put him in the puncture room, I came out screaming. Soon the doctor comes out and gives me the worst news of my life that he didn’t make it, that he didn’t make it. I picked him up and started crying. I blew on his mouth to see if he would come back to me because in my head he was warm, he was going to come back.”

In a statement, Nova Friburgo City Hall said that it sympathizes with the family’s pain and that internal investigations regarding the incident are being carried out.
