A man was killed by Israeli police this Saturday (1st) near the Al-Aqsa Mosque, an icon of Palestinian nationalism. The fact occurred at a time of great Muslim presence for the holy month of Ramadan.
According to police, the man grabbed an officer’s gun and fired it, prompting the officer to shoot and kill him. The description of events, however, is being questioned by Arab leaders.
The holy site, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount, remained relatively quiet on Saturday.
The dead man was identified as Mohammad Khaled al-Osaib, 26, from the Bedouin town of Hura in southern Israel. Lawmaker Mansour Abbas, whose United Arab List party is popular in the region, said the victim was a medical student and questioned the police account.
“All we demand is the truth,” said Abbas.
“Reuters” could not immediately verify the official version. According to police, the incident took place in a location not covered by security cameras. Footage of similar incidents in the past usually surfaced within a short period of time.
Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians are rising after months of violence in areas of Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, and tension in Al-Aqsa has often been the trigger for violence in recent years.
