In the second quarter of 2021, the global smartphone market grew by 19% year on year and at the same time declined by 7% when compared to the previous quarter. This is evidenced by a new report published by research company Counterpoint Research.
According to analysts from Counterpoint Research, in the period from April to June of this year, global shipments of smartphones amounted to 329 million units. Experts attribute the slight drop in sales to component shortages and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The market leader remains the South Korean company Samsung. But the second place is now occupied by the Chinese company Xiaomi, having moved Apple to third place.
In the past three months, Samsung sold 58 million of its smartphones, which is 24% less than in the first quarter of this year. Because of this, the market share of the South Korean giant fell from 22% to 18%. At the same time, for Xiaomi, the second quarter was the best ever, as the Chinese company was able to significantly increase its market share in China, Southeast Asia and Europe. On a year-on-year basis, Xiaomi smartphone shipments grew 98% thanks to record demand for the Redmi 9, Note 9, Note 10, as well as the flagship Mi 11 series. For the first time in the company’s history, the quarterly shipments of Xiaomi smartphones exceeded 50 million.
At the same time, Apple dropped to third place, despite record sales of its flagship iPhone 12 series. According to analysts, iPhone shipments of all generations fell by 18% quarter-on-quarter, but on an annualized basis, on the contrary, grew by 30 %. Apple sold a total of 48.9 million iPhones in the last quarter. But Apple’s revenue for the year grew by 52%.

If we talk about the supply of smartphones in quantitative terms, then Apple really takes only the third place, but if we consider from the point of view of revenue, then the iPhone manufacturer is in the lead by a wide margin from competitors. Analysts estimate that in the last quarter Apple received 41% of the profit of the entire mobile market, up from 34% a year earlier. Apple is followed by Samsung with a 15 percent stake. Xiaomi got only 9% of the total revenue. Two other Chinese brands, OPPO and Vivo, received 9% each. The remaining 17% was shared by other companies. In total, smartphone manufacturers earned about $ 96 billion in the second quarter, which is 25% more compared to the same period last year.
