The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claim to have resumed combat operations against Hamas this Friday (1st), after 7 days of pause in bombings. A new truce agreement has not been established between the two parties and attacks in Gaza were reported this morning, as well as sirens in Sderot, Israel.
An hour after the end of the truce, at 2 am (BrasÃlia time), 7 am local time, none of the main parties involved – Hamas, Qatar, Israel, the USA or Egypt – publicly declared a collapse in the negotiations.
Israel accuses the radical Islamic group of violating the truce agreement by firing an alleged missile at the country.
Minutes after the week-long truce ended, Israeli military vehicles were firing in northwestern Gaza, according to the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry.
In a statement, the ministry also said that Israeli aircraft were in the skies over the area.
Hostage release
Negotiations over the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza are still ongoing, a source familiar with the negotiations told CNN even after the Israeli military announced the resumption of combat operations in Palestinian territory this Friday.
The negotiations aimed to extend the seven-day pause in the war.
Under a previously reached agreement, Hamas was expected to propose an eighth hostage list – 10 women and children to be released this Friday in exchange for an extra day of respite.
Israel demanded that Hamas release women and children alive before moving on to other groups of hostages.
Israel also warned that large-scale military operations would resume as soon as the current hostage release phase ended. But U.S. officials have said negotiations will continue regardless of the release of the remaining hostages.
