Israel: Raids in Gaza are an operation ‘against an immediate threat’, says Lapid

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said the Israeli military was conducting an operation “against an immediate threat” after strikes targeting the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.

“Israel conducted a precision counter-terrorist operation against an immediate threat,” Lampid said on television. “Islamic Jihad is a proxy for Iran that wants to destroy the state of Israel and kill innocent Israelis. We will do whatever it takes to defend our people.”

During this “preemptive strike” in the Gaza Strip against Islamic Jihad, 15 militants were killed, Israeli military spokesman Richard Hatch estimated after a first round of raids. He clarified that the Jewish state was expecting rockets to be fired from Gaza into central Israel.

Tonight, the Israeli military said it was continuing its strikes against Islamic Jihad, mainly east of Gaza City, adding that special forces and artillery were targeting the group’s military positions in the Palestinian enclave.

Islamic Jihad, an organization considered terrorist by Israel, the European Union and the United States, has confirmed the death of one of its leaders, Taishir Al-Jabari.

In Gaza, the health ministry said ten civilians were killed “including a five-year-old girl” and 55 were injured.
