Japan: Why Miyake-jima Island is considered one of the most dangerous places in the world

THE Japan is a popular travel destination with most choosing the country’s capital, Tokyo, for its progressive innovations, bright lights, arcade games and the fashionable Harajuku or Kyoto neighborhood for its rich, traditional Zen character. However, there is a place in the country, the Miyake-jima Island, considered one of the most dangerous places in the world.

Miyake-jima, then, is an island in the archipelago of the Izu Islands, which is located about 180 km south of Tokyo, according to India Today, and has about 2,884 inhabitants. But Miyake-jima is known – and therefore avoided by tourists visiting Japan – for its unsustainable and potentially deadly conditions.

The land that makes up Miyake-jima Island is supported at the top of an active volcano chain which has exploded six times in the last 100 years, as noted by Atlas Obscura. The 2000, the island’s Mount Oyama erupts as a result of 17,500 earthquakes that occurred between June 26 and July 21 of the same yearaccording to India Today.

Follow mass evacuation of more than 3,600 people and for more than eight years after the explosion, flights were not allowed in the area due to the high levels poisonous gases, especially sulfur, leaking from the ground. Five years after the eruption, Miyake-jima residents were able to return to the island if they really wanted to, but had to wear gas masks at all times to protect themselves from toxicity.

However dangerous it sounds island, has places that are definitely worth discovering, as is the case with the most adventurous travelers who choose it as a stop during their trip to Japan. Tourists can visit the island by boat or helicopter from Tokyo – and some do, often hoping to see Dolphins during diving. It seems that for some determined souls, the potential rewards of Miyake-jima outweigh its significant risks.
