Russian-led forces have begun withdrawing from Kazakhstan, where they were deployed to help President Karim-Yomart Tokeyev’s government deal with unprecedented mobilizations and unrest that rocked the country, the Russian Defense Ministry said today.
A ceremony was held in Almaty this morning with the participation of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) soldiers who took part in the operation, according to an AFP correspondent.
“The peacekeeping operation is over (…) we have fulfilled our duties,” said Russian General Andrei Serdyukov, commander of the 2,030 CSTO troops from Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Kazakhstan on January 6.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, these troops “began to prepare military and technical equipment to be loaded on Russian warplanes in view of their return to their permanent base.”
According to Tokayev and confirmed by the CSTO, the withdrawal of troops will be completed in ten days.
Last week, Kazakhstan was rocked by unprecedented riots and riots, the worst since the country gained its independence in 1991. Dozens of people have been killed and hundreds injured and at least 12,000 arrested in the crackdown.
Authorities in Kazakhstan have called the mobilization a “terrorist” attack, with President Tokayev calling it a “coup attempt”. The protests erupted after the announcement of the increase in fuel prices, at a time when living standards in Kazakhstan are deteriorating amid endemic corruption.
