Keeping in mind the growing demands of enterprise infrastructures, Kioxia has announced that it is ready to start mass production of its XD6 series solid state drives. This is an EDSFF E1.S SSD with a thickness of 9.5 mm. Introduced in late 2020, they were the first EDSFF E1.S SSDs to meet the specific hyperscale data center (DPC) requirements, including the OCP NVMe Cloud SSD specification for performance, power, and thermal performance.
According to Kioxia, the new SSDs for servers in cloud and hyperscale data centers are designed to increase data density, system efficiency and management. The E1.S small form factor proposed by the EDSFF consortium and compliant with the OCP NVMe Cloud SSD specification is expected to replace the M.2 form factor. Its advantages include higher storage density, performance, reliability, and more efficient cooling. Importantly, E1.S drives are hot-swappable.
The XD6 uses Kioxia’s 3D BiCS FLASH. These drives are optimized for read workloads. Their resource is estimated by the manufacturer as the possibility of one complete rewriting per day during the five-year warranty period. The drives comply with NVMe 1.3c and PCIe 4.0 specifications, support TCG-Opal 2.0 encryption. They are offered in 1.92 TB and 3.84 TB sizes. The manufacturer does not provide prices.
