The cartoonist Laertes 73, as well as Angeli, 68, marked not only the cartoons and Brazilian graphic industry but they portrayed the city of São Paulo and typically São Paulo and Brazilian characters in a way that remains a reference to this day. In conversation with the CNN she assessed the impact of her friend who created characters like Rê Bordosa which turns 40 in 2024.
“I see myself as a participant in a movement that has its origins in Angeli of identifying and creating brands of popular culture, of stories, characters and situations that he created”, described Laerte, when evaluating that Angeli’s importance is greater than his own. for comics.
This identity, according to Laerte, led Angeli to create the universe of Chiclete com Banana and a cartoon language in Folha with a language that only he knew. “The size of Angeli’s importance is gigantic”, summarized the cartoonist.
Among her friend’s work, the artist Laerte likes the characters Meiaoito and Runt, who are portrayed together by Angeli. Both are revolutionaries and the cartoonist used them to create humor while portraying the leftist movement in the 1980s.
“I really like [deles]”, replied Laerte when asked by CNN who would be her friend’s favorite characters, who reported having a personal relationship as she herself was involved with the leftist movement and even showed Angeli the reports she made. “I think Angeli saw a little of this in the creation of Meiaoito and Nanico. (…) I think it’s a very humorous creation and a very interesting vision of what happened.”
Partnership, two weeks of work and the result in a “free and open” book
Contemporaries, the last partnership between Laerte and Angeli was the collection “Baiacu” (2017).
According to the synopsis of the work, “the artists worked together to conceive and create a free and open work that experiments with the language of comics, poetry, prose and photography” during the two weeks they spent together at the residence at Casa do Sol, where the Hilda Hilst Institute is based.

The last project between the two together, however, was in audiovisual. The film “Bob Cuspe – We Don’t Like People ” (2021), based on the character Bob Cuspe created by Angeli, represents creator and creature in stop-motion in a funk film with special appearances, including Laerte – who dubs herself in the work.
“I was honored with my participation there and I thought the dolls were really cool, especially the doll that represents me in the film”, said Laerte to CNN . “I was thrilled to put on my voice and see that doll create a kind of soul of mine. I was very happy.”
Laerte is part of a group that will participate in a party to celebrate Rê Bordosa and raise funds for Angeli
