Fifteen to 17 people are reported missing after shipwreck offshore Liberia, announced the coast guard of this West African country.
Niko Ivanka sounded the alarm late Saturday afternoon, and rescue operations began immediately, a Coast Guard spokesman said during a press conference in Monrovia.
The ship had departed from Monrovia on Saturday morning bound for Buchanan, 100km southeast, when it started to get water, the head of the country’s shipping authority, Eugene Len Nagbe, told reporters.
Eleven people were rescued, he added. According to the ship’s statement, 18 people were on board, nine crew members and nine passengers.
Eugene Len Nagbe clarified that the ship in question was not allowed to carry passengers. It had already been banned from sailing because it had been deemed unfit to travel.
