Lula hopes to announce plan for Venezuela to resume debt payments to Brazil

Several South American heads of state will meet in Brasilia next week at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). According to Daniela Lima, anchor of CNN at the time, a plan should be disclosed for Venezuela to repay the debt it owes Brazil.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro will attend the summit. According to a source, the South American country, however, suffers such strong embargoes that, even if it had the necessary money, international payment channels are blocked.

The summit between the leaders is scheduled for May 30th. According to the Brazilian government, the objective is to “promote a frank dialogue among all, with a view to identifying common denominators, discussing perspectives for the region and reactivating the South American cooperation agenda in key areas”.

Iuri Pitta, Policy analyst at CNN assessed that the plan that should be announced also serves to soften the attacks that arise whenever there is some kind of rapprochement or agenda with leaders of Venezuela, Argentina, among other countries.

Thus, Pitta also points out that it is an attempt by the government to maintain and resume foreign relations with countries from different angles, with Argentina being the first nation visited by Lula in his third term as president and the United States afterwards, for example.

The PT reinforced on other occasions the intention to bring Brazil closer to other countries in South America, in addition to resuming negotiations in agreement with Mercosur and the European Union.

In early May, during a visit by Argentine President Alberto Fernández, Lula pointed out that he will make any and all sacrifices to help the neighboring country.
