The Civil Police of Pernambuco (PCPE) is investigating the case of a grandfather suspected of raping his own 12-year-old granddaughter in the Água Fria neighborhood, north of Recife. The case was reported by the victim’s father, as soon as the girl told him about the abuse. The incident occurred on Sunday (1st), but was only registered on Monday (2).
In a statement, the police reported that, accompanied by the child protection council, the girl’s father went to the police station to file a police report. “The general services assistant reports that his 12-year-old daughter was raped by her own maternal grandfather,” the statement confirms.
Sexual violence against minors
In Pernambuco, 2,000 cases of sexual violence against children and adolescents were recorded in 2023, following a worrying scenario of violence in this age group throughout Brazil.
Female children and adolescents are the vast majority of victims in the country when it comes to sexual violence, representing 87.3% of cases in the last three years.
The data are part of the report Panorama of Lethal and Sexual Violence against Children and Adolescents in Brazil launched by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP).
