One group of ten passengers were unable to board the Voepass plane that crashed in Vinhedo (SP) on Friday (9), killing 58 passengers and four crew members.
Two of them were not on the aircraft because they missed the check-in time at Cascavel airport, in Paraná.
At Cascavel airport (PR), where the Voepass ATR 72-500 took off at 11:56 am towards Cumbica Airport in Guarulhos, Adriano Assis called his daughter and said with a choked voice: “I missed the flight. Daddy loves you.”
“Where are you? Me too, my daughter (in the background you can hear the daughter saying that she missed him). Daddy is already going home. I missed the flight. Hey, daughter, because I missed the flight. Because the flight I missed, it crashed, the plane. God is very good, daughter. Daddy loves you, okay?”, said the passenger.
Assis arrived at the Cascavel terminal at 9:40 am, but the counter was closed.
So he went out for a coffee and returned to the office at 10:40 a.m., but was unable to board. He was told that he had to be at the office an hour earlier. From Guarulhos, he planned to catch another plane to go to Rio, where he lives.
Maranhense confused companies and missed check-in
José Felipe Araújo, 21, was also prevented from boarding the flight. He confused the company that would fly to Guarulhos and did not have time to board the Voepass ATR.
“It turned out that I made a mistake with the companies. I thought I was going to leave with Latam, not Voepass, which unfortunately was the one that fell through,” said the passenger in his statement.
According to José Felipe, a group of 10 people complained to the ticket agent about being prevented from boarding the plane. From Guarulhos, he intended to go to Teresina (PI) and then continue to Maranhão, where he lives. The passenger reported that he heard about the accident on the news and received calls from his mother.
“When the news came out, everyone said that the plane going to Guarulhos had crashed. I was left without strength. I was shaking all over. (…) My mother is calling me and everything. I can’t even talk to my mother properly. But I thank God very much,” said the man from Maranhão.

Doctor changes ticket at father’s request and does not board
Doctor Juliana Chiumento was going from Cascavel, in Paraná, to Rio de Janeiro on Friday (9), with a connection in Guarulhos, but, at her father’s request, she changed her ticket to this Saturday (10).
“I’m very nervous, very emotional. There’s no way I could get to this airport and not remember my friends who were on this flight yesterday, who got on board,” said Juliana this Saturday, at Cascavel airport, where she caught a Gol flight to return to Rio. “It was God who told my father to send me a message. Telling me not to go on Friday, to go on Saturday morning.”
Juliana worked at the Cascavel Cancer Hospital (Uopeccan). Among the hospital professionals who died in Friday’s plane crash were clinical oncology residents Arianne Albuquerque Estevan Risso and Mariana Comiran Belim.
“I lost friends. Many of the people on the flight were my coworkers and friends,” Juliana lamented. “May God comfort the hearts of all my family and give them strength. At this point, my father could be here, behind me, behind my body.”
Causes of the fall
Weather conditions are among the hypotheses that explain the crash of the plane, which plummeted four thousand meters in one minute. Images taken by residents of Vinhedo show the aircraft falling in a “flat spin” and indicate that the accident occurred due to a loss of lift, known in the aeronautical world as a “stall”.
According to experts, the loss of lift of the aircraft may be associated with the formation of ice on the wings of the plane. However, only the investigation by the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa) and the analysis of the black box will be able to elucidate the reasons for the disaster.
