THE President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, presided at the Presidential Palace, meeting for the episodes in Chlorakawith the participation of the Minister of Justice and Public Order, the Chief of Police, the Commander of the KYP and the Director of the Press Office of the President of the Republic.
After the meeting, the director of the Press Office of the President, Viktoros Papadopoulos, told the journalists that at the meeting “the President of the Republic was thoroughly informed about last night’s incidents in Chloraka”.
“The President of the Republic was kept informed throughout last night and was now fully informed about all the events and up close. They discussed with the Minister of Justice and Public Order, the Chief of Police and the Commander of the KYP the operational plan in place to maintain security and peace in the region. The President of the Republic gave orders so that to ensure what is needed, security in the area with all the means available to the state».
He added that “you have witnessed the fact that the government since the day it took office has been dealing with immigration, the issue of irregular immigration, in all ways. Arrivals have halved, returns have increased, application examinations have doubled.
For the specific issue of Chloraka and the specific property, decisions of the Council of Ministers have been taken and are being implemented to the letter. By the end of the week that has been set and a time limit of September 1st, this issue will be completed as well. Everything that needs to be done is done. The official state does what needs to be done.”
Asked if policing is expected to increase in the area, Mr. Papadopoulos said yes “There is a plan, the Police is and will be in the area. We hope nothing else will happen. And our appeal is that nothing else be done.”
Asked if additional measures are being considered after yesterday’s incidents, Mr. Papadopoulos said that “incidents between foreigners and Cypriots have not taken place. These were avoided and this was a great success. What happened is that after it (the demonstration) broke up, some hooded men with bats and other objects intervened in these events. The Police, the government, the state will enforce law and order.”
To a question, he said that “from the first moment, both the Minister of Justice and the Chief of Police were there, and despite the protests, everything went smoothly up to a point. After that point you witnessed what happened. Peace and security in the region will not be allowed to be disturbed.”
He added that “Arrests have been made and all the necessary preventive and deterrent measures have been taken and we will continue on that basis.”
To a journalist’s remark that a Syrian protester who tested positive for drugs was in negotiations with the minister and the Chief of Police, Mr. Papadopoulos said that “he was not in the negotiations, he accompanied one of the Syrians at that time. From that time he was at the police station, he was reported for some of his other statements and posts and then arrested.”
Finally, Mr. Papadopoulos noted that “those who have broken the law will face justice.”
