North Korea announced today that it was launching a “new type” of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) Hwasong-17 to bolster its nuclear deterrent against “US imperialism,” according to the official Pyongyang news agency.
It was the first complete ICBM test by North Korea since 2017. According to flight data, the North Korean missile flew higher and farther than ever before, before falling into the sea off the coast of Japan.
Kim Jong Un gave the order and personally supervised the missile test, KCNA emphasizes. “The emergence of the new strategic weapon,” said the North Korean leader, “will make the whole world aware of the strength of our armed forces, once again.”
The missile test was condemned by the leaders of the United States, Japan and South Korea.
Photographs released by the KCNA showed a huge black rocket with a white warhead soaring into the sky, leaving behind a fiery tail.
