Number of drownings drops 38% on beaches in the state of Rio de Janeiro

With the Fire Department’s Operation Summer 2022 in progress, the state of Rio de Janeiro recorded a 38% drop in the number of rescues in the first 15 days of January this year compared to 2021. Even with rain, 643 drownings were carried out in the sea ​​in this period. According to the corporation, the reduction is related to prevention strategies reinforced with the implementation of signaling flags and informational totems.

In the capital of Rio de Janeiro, the number of drownings dropped by about 33%. In 2021, there were 511 rescues between January 1st and 15th. In 2022, there were 341 redemptions in the same period. In the city of Niterói, the drop was more expressive, 63%.

Operation Summer 2022 runs until March. This action by the Fire Department aims to reinforce tactical prevention and maritime rescue actions throughout the state. At this time, there are records of a significant increase in the frequency of bathers and boat traffic on the beaches.

The corporation also recommends that bathers always look for places close to lifeguard posts; respect the signal flags; ask the lifeguard which is the most appropriate place for bathing in the sea; do not drink alcoholic beverages and enter the sea.
