Four people died and nine were hospitalized after a shooting at a high school in Georgia, USA, on Wednesday morning (4), according to information from authorities.
A panic button system, which officials say was implemented just a week ago, saved lives during the shooting, Apalachee High School teacher Stephen Kreyenbuhl said Thursday (5).
The system “absolutely saved lives,” Kreyenbuhl told CNN . “I would recommend it to any school district,” he added.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Wednesday that authorities in Georgia were notified of the shooting through the system, which was implemented just a week ago.
Smith explained that teachers at the school have been equipped with Centegix ID badges, which include a panic button that can alert authorities to dangerous situations.
Kreyenbuhl said teachers press a button in case of emergency. Four times, they call the school administration; eight times, they call the police.
“In fact, I saw the lockdown being initiated before I even heard gunshots,” he noted.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the events at Apalachee High School,” a Centegix spokesperson said, adding that the company cannot comment on the ongoing investigation.
Kreyenbuhl also said he hopes the community’s pain will spur more action.
“Many people, in order to express their grief, want to cry, want to hug their loved ones, want to make sure everyone is safe,” Kreyenbuhl said. “However, I think it’s appropriate that other people’s response to grief is activism. They want to make a positive change in their community, whatever that may be.”
“I hope more laws can be made to prevent these situations and keep our children safe,” he said.
