Peru: At least 24 dead in a bus accident

At least 24 people were killed in traffic accident accident with busnoted overnight at Peruaccording to the bus’s operating company.

A spokeswoman for Molina Union, Angie Cabrera, told media from a hospital in Ayacucho that at least 24 people died when the bus they were traveling in, veered off its course and fell into a ravine about 200 meters away.

“We deeply regret the accident … so far we know there are 24 deaths,” he told Canal N.

Manuel Xevayos, mayor of the Anco region where the crash occurred, said earlier today that at least 20 people had died and 20 were injured, according to the RPP media.

The Peruvian Transport Supervisory Service (SUTRAN) confirmed the accident in a statement, without specifying the number of dead or injured. SUTRAN emphasized that the bus was traveling from Ayacucho to the city of Huancayo.
