The Federal Police (PF) will investigate an attempted arson attack at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (Inpa) in Manaus. On Saturday (14), security cameras recorded a man, not yet identified, setting fire near the wall of the Bosque da Ciência, a public visitation space, and research laboratories in the capital of Amazonas.
“The Management called the Federal Police to investigate the fires that occurred in areas of vegetation belonging to Inpa and its surroundings, which are part of the Manaós Environmental Protection Area (APA Manaós),” Inpa reported in a statement.
The institute reported that there were no injuries and that it requested the support of the Military Police to intensify patrols in the region, to curb criminal activities.
This is not the first time that an attempted arson has been recorded at INPA this year. On September 4, a fire started outside the institute’s premises and spread inside. In both cases, the fires were controlled with the help of members of the internal community and the Fire Department.
“The Inpa Management reaffirms its commitment to the preservation of natural heritage and is committed to holding those potentially involved in the incidents accountable,” the note concludes.
