Rain left city of SP in attention for 2 hours; 140 thousand were without light

The city of São Paulo was in a state of attention for flooding for about two hours on Friday afternoon (24) due to the heavy rain that hit the state capital. About 140,000 properties were left without electricity due to temporal.

The São Paulo City Hall (CGE) Climate Emergency Management Center placed the entire city in attention at 3:27 pm, which remained until 5:35 pm.

Throughout the Metropolitan Region, the Fire Department registered, between 15:30 and 18:50, 97 calls for falling trees, 219 for flooding, four for collapse and three for falling electrical wiring. There is no record of victims.

Throughout the afternoon, the city had 33 flooding points, 29 being impassable, according to the CGE. At 6:40 pm, the capital still had six impassable flooding points, two in the North Zone, three in the central region and one in the West Zone.

The heavy rains generated traffic problems. According to the Traffic Engineering Company (CET), the city recorded 1,025 kilometers of congestion in the late afternoon. It was the largest number of the year so far.

Another consequence of the storm was the lack of energy. The dealership Enel reported that about 140,000 customers were left without light in the city of São Paulo during the storm. At 18:30, 126,351 units were still in the dark in the municipality, the equivalent of 2.27% of the total.

Impacts on public transportation

This Friday’s storm caused stoppages and delays in the São Paulo trains and subway system.

The 12-Safira line of the Paulista Metropolitan Train Company (CPTM), which connects the central region of the state capital to the municipality of Poá, in Greater São Paulo, was interrupted around 17h. At 7 pm, the branch remained inoperative.

Other lines of CPTM, such as 10-Turquoise, 11-Coral and 13-Jade, had partial interruptions.

In the subway, the 1-blue, 2-green and 3-red lines had problems throughout the day. The most affected was 1-blue, which had flooded at the Jardim São Paulo and Tucuruvi stations in the North Zone.

Images recorded by passengers show Jardim São Paulo Station taken by water. The terminal stairs became “waterfalls“.

Shopping ceiling collapses in the North Zone

The heavy rains caused part of the roof of the North mall to collapse. There were no victims.

Civil Defense Alert

During the storm, the state civil defense sent alerts by cell phone to users in São Paulo.

The notification warned of storm accompanied by gusts of wind and risk of flooding.

The notification was sent by the Civil Defense System Alert, through Cellbroadcas technology, called Internationally as wireless emergency alert, released in December last year. This is the first time the tool has been used in the capital and the 11th in the state of São Paulo.
