Red Cross will meet families of hostages held by Hamas

The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will meet this Tuesday (14), with the families of hostages held by Hamas, in Gaza. The meeting takes place amid negotiations between world leaders to try to free the victims.

Hamas kidnapped at least 240 people during the attack in southern Israel on October 7. Few hostages have been released so far.

Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the committee, will hold a meeting with Israel’s foreign and health ministers alongside the families at the headquarters of the Red Cross Committee in Geneva.

“The families are going through an extremely painful time and I want to highlight how hard we are working on behalf of their loved ones. The case is a priority and I know the enormous pain the families are experiencing,” Spoljaric said in a statement.

“We are insisting on the release of the hostages and we are doing everything in our power”, he states.

“We can’t do this alone; Agreements that allow the ICRC to carry out this work safely must be reached,” Spoljaric added.

The Red Cross said it requested access to the hostages and information about their conditions.

The humanitarian organization has also intensified its aid response to Gaza, where the humanitarian crisis is worsening. At least 11,180 Palestinians have died so far, according to authorities in the West Bank.

The ICRC said it focused its aid efforts in Gaza “in particular on health care amid the dangerous conditions of war”.
