Qatari Tayyeb Belmahdi became the new head of the board of Russian oil giant Rosneft today, succeeding former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who resigned from the post in May.
According to the company’s statement after its annual general meeting, Belmahdi, a “renowned expert” in the oil and gas sectors, has “45 years of experience in energy companies” in the Middle East and has held various positions of responsibility in Qatar Energy group.
Two other Qataris, Faisal Alswaidi and Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi, who represent Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund Qatar Investment Authority, are joining the board of Russia’s top oil company.
The general meeting decided to pay “record dividends” to the group’s shareholders for 2021, totaling 441.5 billion rubles (about 7.6 billion euros at today’s exchange rate), an amount corresponding to 50% of its net profits Rosneft for the previous year. In 2021 the company’s net profit increased sixfold, reaching 883 billion rubles (€15.3 billion), the highest net profit it has ever recorded.
In late May, Rosneft announced the departure of Schroeder, who has been heavily criticized by Berlin for his close relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite the war in Ukraine. Matthias Varning and former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, who had waltzed with Putin in 2018, also left the board.
