Russia: Finland and Sweden’s NATO Accession Is “A Mistake With Widespread Consequences”

Russian Vice Chancellor Sergei Ryabkov said on Monday that Finland and Sweden should have no illusions that Moscow will simply tolerate their membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), calling the decision a a mistake that would have far-reaching consequences.

The change in posture of two historically neutral powers would be one of the biggest transformations of Europe’s security architecture in decades, reflecting a sea change in perceptions in the Nordic region since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

“It is clear that the situation is changing radically in light of what is happening,” Ryabkov said, according to the Interfax news agency. “The fact that the security of Sweden and Finland will not be strengthened as a result of this decision is very clear to us.”

“They must have no illusions that we are just going to tolerate this,” Ryabkov said. “The general level of military tension will increase, predictability in this sphere will decrease. It is a pity that common sense is being sacrificed for some phantom provision about what should be done in this situation,” declared the vice chancellor.

NATO and the United States said on Sunday that they were confident that Turkey, which has good relations with Russia, would not suspend the two Nordic states from joining the Western military alliance.
