Russia said on Thursday (15) that Russian forces had taken control of a village in eastern Ukraine, just 16 km from the important city of Pokrovsk.
The city is located next to the main roads that supply Ukrainian forces in the region.
Ukraine’s surprise attack on Russia’s Kursk region on August 6 was seen by military analysts as an attempt to force Russia to divert forces under the Ukrainian front.
However, the Russian Defense Ministry said Russian forces had won a series of victories along the front, from the Kharkhiv region to Luhansk and Donetsk.
The ministry said Russia had seized the village of Ivanivka as part of a clear effort to reach the Pokrovsk highway in the Donetsk region.
Russia said that in a series of battles in the region, Russian forces units defeated Ukrainian forces.
Reuters could not independently verify battlefield information from either side.
Ukraine said there were no signs that Russian military pressure was easing along the eastern front within its borders on Thursday (15), more than a week after its incursion into Russia, and reported the heaviest fighting in weeks near Pokrovsk.
