Russian troops withdrew from the eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman to avoid being surrounded by the Ukrainian army, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday.
“In connection with the creation of a siege threat, Allied troops were withdrawn from the Krasny Liman settlement to more advantageous lines,” the Defense Ministry said on the social media platform Telegram.
The Russian name for the city of Lyman is Krasny Liman.
Ramzan Kadyrov, head of Russia’s Chechnya region, said on Saturday that Moscow should consider using a low-yield nuclear weapon in Ukraine amid new upheavals on the battlefield.
In a Telegram message criticizing Russian commanders for abandoning the eastern Ukrainian city of Lyman on Saturday, Kadyrov wrote: “In my personal opinion, more drastic measures must be taken, until the declaration of martial law in the border areas. and the use of low-yield nuclear weapons”.
Ukraine mounts siege for Russian troops
Earlier on Saturday, Ukraine surrounded thousands of Russian soldiers in the town of Lyman. This is considered a critical location for Moscow, in an operation that is still ongoing, a Ukrainian military spokesman said.
The capture of the city, which Russia used as a logistics and transport hub for its operations in the northern Donetsk region, would be a major setback for the Kremlin’s plan to seize the entire industrial Donbass region.
“The Russian grouping in the Lyman area is surrounded,” said Serhii Cherevatyi, a spokesman for eastern Ukraine forces.
