Samsung unveils Exynos 2200 processor: with AMD RDNA 2 graphics and ray tracing

Over the past few months, the network has been actively discussing Samsung’s latest flagship processor called Exynos 2200, which, judging by numerous leaks of information, should provide incredible opportunities for future smartphones. And today, January 18, Samsung representatives decided to stop speculation on rumors by officially unveiling the next generation flagship processor – it will, as expected, come with an integrated AMD RDNA 2 GPU, which will provide the device with better tracing support and Variable Rate Shading technology.

The company made a special emphasis on the fact that previously ray tracing was available exclusively on stationary systems – PCs, laptops and next-generation consoles. Now, for the first time on the market, smartphones with the new processor will be able to show users console-level graphics with advanced lighting and other image bonuses. The company also reported that this processor is produced using modern 4 nm technology at Samsung’s own production facilities using lithography in the ultraviolet range. And, of course, the South Korean giant has equipped the novelty with an impressive number of cores and additional modules.

For example, the processor part of the Exynos 2200 consists of eight cores built on the ARMv9 architecture and divided into three clusters. The first cluster houses the main high-performance Cortex-X2 core, the second one has three Cortex-A710 cores (medium performance), and the third one has energy-efficient Cortex-A510 cores. Moreover, the system-on-a-chip includes a dual-core NPU neuroprocessor, which is responsible for accelerating the work of artificial intelligence in certain tasks. As a result, the latest Samsung processor received a significant performance increase (exactly twice) compared to the previous generation – 26 TOPS.

Unfortunately, the company did not provide any tests or real performance figures – so far, it is possible to talk about the advantages of the Exynos 2200 only in theory, while insider tests indicate that there is no advantage over the Snapdragon of the new Exynos. On the other hand, Samsung has already officially announced that they have started mass production of the new flagship processor, which will be presented in the flagship Galaxy S22 line – in about a month, if the rumors are true, the smartphone will be officially presented, and then the test data will definitely appear.
