Sierra Leone: The country’s president sees an attempt to overthrow the government behind the protests

Its president speaks of an attempt to overthrow the government Sierra LeoneJulius Maanda Bio, commenting on the mass protests that broke out during the week, as a result of which 21 civilians and six police officers lost their lives.

On Wednesday, police used tear gas and in some cases opened fire to disperse crowds of protesters who threw stones and burned tires in the capital Freetown and in northern cities that are opposition strongholds.

“It was not a protest about the high cost of living, which is related to the ongoing global financial crisis”Maanda Bio emphasized in his speech.

The protesters were calling for “violent overthrow of the democratically elected government”the president of Sierra Leone emphasized and assured that an investigation will be conducted into all deaths during the riots.
