The chancellor, Olaf Solz, from Uzbekistan spoke of a “very large number” of people arriving in Germany and a “need to bring the situation under control”. As of midnight on Monday, the control regime that is already in place at the borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland will also apply at the borders to Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France.
