Taylor Swift concert postponed: Paes says “artist is not well” after fan’s death

The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), stated that the show that Taylor Swift would perform at Engenhão this Saturday (18) was postponed because the American singer is not well due to the death of a fan after falling ill during her presentation on Friday (17).

In a video published on X, formerly known as Twitter, Paes also said that another reason that justified the postponement of this Saturday’s show was the heat wave hitting the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

“There are two factors that lead to the show being postponed from today to Monday. Firstly, the artist seems to be unwell given what happened yesterday. In fact, the temperature in Engenhão is very high, there is a lot of medical care. I want to ask people who didn’t arrive at Engenhão to turn around, not to leave the house”, said Paes.

Taylor announced postponement on Instagram

The information was released by Taylor Swift herself in the stories on her official Instagram profile, this Saturday.

“I’m writing from my dressing room at the stadium. We have decided to postpone today’s show due to the extreme temperatures in Rio. The safety and well-being of my fans, my castmates and crew are and will always come first,” wrote the American.

Historical record

This Saturday, the city of Rio de Janeiro recorded an all-time record for thermal sensation, at 8:10 am, with 59.7ºC, at Guaratiba station, in the west zone of the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The information was disclosed to CNN by the Rio Operations Center, from the city hall.

This Saturday, Rio also recorded the highest temperature of 2023. Also at Guaratiba station, Alerta Rio recorded, at 11:05 am, 43.8ºC. This is the highest value since 2008, when thermometers reached 44.2ºC in the São Cristóvão neighborhood, in the city center.

Fan falls ill and dies after cardiac arrest

Ana Clara Benevides, aged 23, died on Friday night (17), after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest during Taylor Swift’s concert at the Nilton Santos stadium, in Rio de Janeiro.

In conversation with the CNN a cousin of the victim, Jaine Benevides reported that Ana was at the show accompanied by a friend.

“She traveled to Rio especially for Taylor’s show. It was very hot, at the beginning of the show she felt sick and passed out,” she said.

According to the Municipal Health Department (SMS), the young woman was rescued at the aid station inside the stadium and, later, taken to the Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital, where she was admitted at 8:50 pm.

“Resuscitation maneuvers were carried out, but, unfortunately, she did not survive”, informed the Secretariat.
