The singer and songwriter Taylor Swift received an honorary doctorate from New York University on Wednesday (18), and told the graduates that everything will be fine, echoing the sentiments of his hit “Shake It Off.”
The 32-year-old artist urged students to make the most of their choices. “Life can be heavy – especially if you try to carry it all at once… All the grudges, all the updates about your ex… You get to choose what your life has time and space for.”
“I have some good news: it’s totally up to you. I have terrifying news: it is totally up to you,” she added, dressed in a purple gown at the graduation ceremony at Yankee Stadium.
She praised the graduates for taking on the challenge of attending college during the pandemic. “Never be shy about trying, lack of effort is a myth,” Swift said.
The Grammy winner was among the university’s three honorary degree recipients. It was the first college degree for Swift, who performed on tour during high school.
