A 15-year-old autistic student had his arm broken by a military police officer, who was acting as a temporary teacher, during a crisis. The case happened last Tuesday (7) at the Special Education Center 1 of Guará, in the Federal District.
After treatment at the scene, the young man was taken to the Base Hospital. He underwent surgery to place titanium pins in the fractured area.
The military police officer is Renato Caldas Paranã, third sergeant of the PM and temporary teacher hired by the Federal District Education Department (SEEDF) since August this year.
Report card
According to the police report, the student, a level 3 non-verbal autistic, was having a “nervous crisis” when the teacher restrained him, breaking the minor’s arm.
The school unit where the attack took place is intended exclusively for teaching people with syndromes such as ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and Down Syndrome.
However, according to the Autistic Pride Movement, Renato was “totally unprepared to contain an autistic person in crisis”, and “used a technique completely unknown to those working in autism”.
Removal
SEEDF reported, through the Guará Regional Education Coordination, that the student was immediately attended to by the Fire Department and taken to the hospital, accompanied by the school director, a teacher and his grandmother. The ministry also reported that the PM was removed from his duties as a teacher and that the case will be investigated by the Civil Police and the SEEDF Internal Affairs Department.
In a statement, the Military Police said that the teacher “was called to help restrain a student, with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD level 3 non-verbal), who was in a nervous crisis, attacking other students and staff”, and that the teenager had lost his balance, causing the injury.
The corporation classified the case as an accident and highlighted the law that authorizes the accumulation of positions by public servants. The note also emphasizes that “what happened did not occur during military police activity.”
In a post on social media, the Autistic Pride Movement said it “stands in solidarity with the boy and his family, and is available to provide any support he needs.” The statement also announces a meeting next Tuesday (14) to discuss what happened and similar cases. In addition to the Movement, the coordination of the Guará Education Region, the OAB of Guará, the Guardianship Council and family members of autistic people will be present.
