The port of Castellón warns: “Raising the IBI will stop business growth”

The port of Castellón ruled this Friday on one of the new measures that includes the modification of tax ordinances by the City Council: raising the IBI to the port facility. Specifically, the Councilor for the Treasury, David Donate, announced on Wednesday that the coefficient for the port from 0.5 to 1 percent, for which the port facility will have to pay 55,000 euros a year more to the City Council as IBI.

The measure has not been to the liking of the President of the Port Authority,  Rafa Simó, who believes that an increase in IBI to the port of Castellón will have negative repercussions. The also former councilor for Urbanism in the City Council until last September considers that a rise in the IBI would mean a loss of competitiveness and a brake on growth of the nearly a hundred companies installed in the port, so he asks the City Council of the capital of La Plana that the direct and indirect impact on the business fabric is evaluated.

The Port Authority has approved measures in support of these companies, both those installed within the commercial area, and those located in their recreational and leisure area, since it is suffering the effects arising from the pandemic. Measures such as bonuses and split payments », recalled sources from PortCastelló.

In turn, the spokesman of the local government team and new Urban planning building, José Luis López, indicated at a press conference on Friday that we understand the statements of Rafa Simó, his position as president of the port is logical. He watches over the interests of the port companies, it would not be understood otherwise.

However, Lopez insisted that the fiscal measure “goes in line with fiscal escalation and with the will of the governing team to continue to alleviate the effects of the economic crisis”, in reference to other measures that favor medium and small businessmen and the ordinary citizen. We already knew that the coefficient would approach 1 percent, the rise is only 0.5 percent,» added López, thus subtracting weight from the effort that the port will have to make. We understand that whoever can make an effort does it, considered López, pointing out that we are open to everything, in relation to possible negotiations.
