The unmissable Tuscan wines: 21 labels to try

2021 for Italian wine ended with an important one dedicated event able to support the evolution of the sector and investigate the new generation of international consumers starting from one of its territories of excellence, the Tuscany. Is called BE.COME and in Siena he proposed a unique experience starting from wine together with art, fashion, design and sustainability, bringing together Italian excellences.

“When Confagricoltura Siena asked us to think of a new formula to tell the great heritage of Tuscan wine” he explains Alessandra Montana Managing Director e Founder di Communication tease, the agency behind the project, “we were immediately clear that in order to create an experience of value we would have to translate the” wine “product into other worlds to express its value alongside the great Italian excellences such as design, fashion and art for a transversal story full of contaminations. The very name of the BE.COME event leaves the wine matrix to focus on the future, on “What will become or can become” the world of wine “.

From Supertuscan to contemporary IGTs to single vineyard and the selections of the relevant denominations that have obtained international recognition, discovered through the masterclasses coordinated by Gabriele Gorelli, first Italian master of wine together with Justin Knock (Master of Wine wine director of Oeno Group Lond) and Christophe Heynen (same prestigious position as well as leading CO2-neutral importer in Belgium and France.

The so-called Super Tuscan (expression coined by the English journalist Nicholas Belfrage in the mid-eighties to indicate those wines that went “beyond” the disciplinary established in those times, using international vines and enjoying global success) have determined the great fame of Italian wine in the world. From there, Tuscany became a place of pilgrimage for lovers of good living and still today it proves to be one of the regions not only best suited to viticulture but also the home of the most sought-after labels.

While waiting to be able to experience the next edition of BE.COME, we offer Gorelli’s advice on 10 Tuscan wines to be tasted at least once in a lifetime (among those present at the event) plus our selection of “Unmissable” from different areas of the region (in the gallery).
Happy reading and as always #drink consent

The wines recommended by the first Italian master of wine Gabriele Gorelli

Podere Forte – Orcia Village doc
Ease of drinking from a territory known more for its beauty than for its wine production. For those who love biodynamic and seek not only in taste the image of a symbolic place of Tuscany, the Val d’Orcia.

Argiano – Vigna del Suolo Brunello di Montalcino 2016
Wine of the year Italy 2021. Rare finesse and elegance from one of the sunniest corners of the Ilcinese territory. If elegance is your life motto, you cannot fail to have tried this bottle at least once.

San Felice – Vigorello 2016
The first of the “supertuscans”, born in 1968, characterized by a focus on the Pugnitello grape together with Bordeaux varieties. Founder of the success of Tuscan wine in the world.

Marroneto – Our Lady of Grace 2016
Unmistakable interpretation of the most classic side of the municipality of Montalcino. Perfect emblem of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most awarded wines in the world in recent years.

Setteponti Estate – Orma 2019
A Merlot-based Bolgheri that combines extreme drinkability with finesse and elegance. The best expression of the evolution of the Supertuscan, for those who feel contemporary and always look to the future.

Frescobaldi – Gorgona 2020
Produced on one of the smallest islands in Italy, from a project that combines an extreme territory and social condition, this is a distinctive and salty wine, which fully recounts the land and sea from which it comes.

Altesino – Brunello di Montalcino 2016
Cru: particularly valuable land used properly in French wine jargon. This term also arrives in Tuscany and the first real cru of Montalcino is born, Montosoli, expression of all the energy and depth of this land.

Podere Sapaio – Sapaio 2017
If Bolgheri is synonymous with Supertuscan, Il Sapaio is its youngest and most dynamic expression

Dievole – Campinovi 2019
A deeply gastronomic Trebbiano with a distinctly Tuscan approach. A white with great character that does not betray a territory devoted to “red”, and excellent for a refined dinner with friends.

Felsina – Fontalloro 2018
Dense and velvety interpretation of the Chianti Sangiovese.
