Too many online meetings, emails and chats can trigger Burnout, study says

The excess of the Brazilian working day, especially during the home office, can lead to the illness of professionals, according to studies.

Among the main causes for the appearance of Burnout syndrome are digital activity, 85% of cases, that is, the time the person spends in front of screens working, without breaks and mind rest; meetings computed during the weekly working hours (20%), and written communication, with e-mails and corporate chats (20%).

Regarding the working hours, there was an increase of 6.7% in the average time during the pandemic in relation to the pre-pandemic period. Now, the journey is still 3.9% longer than the average recorded in 2019. In relation to the average time that the employee spends concentrating and interacting with the machine, it increased 27.1% in the pandemic period and 21.2% after -pandemic.

When analyzing the item work meetings, there is a massive increase of 95.5%, due to the fact that the meetings are held online and are much more intense. At the current moment, where there is a resumption of face-to-face meetings, the percentage of virtual meetings has dropped to 78.4%.

The survey, carried out by Fhinck Business Solutions, mapped the average working hours of more than 8,000 Brazilians between June 2020 and May 2022.

The objective of the study was to understand, through data generation, the risk factors that can lead to mental stress in employees and provide information to managers to promote improvements in relationships and in the work environment.

Signs of mental exhaustion

The feeling of exhaustion or lack of energy can affect people of any age. The phenomenon is more common among adults, especially in the context of the work environment.

Neurosurgeon Fernando Gomes, professor at Hospital das Clínicas in São Paulo, explains how to identify signs of mental exhaustion that may indicate the need for specialized help.

According to Gomes, the list includes symptoms such as headaches and body aches, lack of concentration, sleep disturbances and excessive irritability.

People who experience generalized body aches, with no apparent cause, can also be victims of exhaustion. Extreme tiredness also reflects a lack of concentration, related to changes in cognitive performance, in addition to impacting sleep, whether in insomnia at night or excessive sleep during the day.

Corporate health in focus

The Brazilian Association of Human Resources (ABRH-Brasil) and the Alliance for Population Health (ASAP) hold the National Human Resources Congress, focusing on Health, on August 23, at the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham), in Sao Paulo.

The meeting, which takes place for the first time in person, aims to bring the best strategies, practices and success stories that contribute to the improvement of corporate health results in Brazil.

“Carrying out Conarh Saúde, in partnership with ASAP, means maturing the corporate sector as the major funder of supplementary health, which can significantly contribute to the readjustment of the current model, centered on the disease, to a model with an emphasis on prevention and promoting health and quality of life”, says Paulo Sardinha, president of ABRH-Brasil.
