TRE rejects Gabriel Monteiro’s candidacy registration for federal deputy

The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) rejected, this Wednesday (31), the candidacy of former councilor Gabriel Monteiro (PL) for federal deputy. He had his mandate impeached on August 18 for breach of decorum and was trying to run for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies.

The decision was by 6 votes to 1 against the candidacy. Rapporteur Luiz Paulo Araújo argued that the impeachment in the Rio de Janeiro Legislature leaves Monteiro ineligible. In addition, he pointed out that the breach of decorum does not match the morality that is expected of a candidate for public power.

Gabriel Monteiro can appeal the decision. THE CNN sought the defense of the parliamentarian and awaits the position on the analysis of the TRE-RJ.

The former councilor was the PL’s bet to raise votes in Rio de Janeiro, boosting the party bench of Jair Bolsonaro and Cláudio Castro in the Federal Chamber. With 4.4 million followers on Instagram, the councilor is a phenomenon on social media. He got the seat in the Rio de Janeiro City Council after winning 60,000 votes in 2020.

However, the stay in the municipal parliament was interrupted after a year and a half. The councilor’s impeachment was the result of a series of accusations that include rape, harassment and exposure of vulnerable people to vexatious situations. He denies the accusations and says he is a victim of political persecution.

After the loss of the mandate, the PSOL filed an action to challenge Monteiro’s candidacy, supported by the Regional Electoral Prosecutor’s Office. The Public Prosecutor’s Office also requested the blocking of free electoral time and campaign funds, a decision taken by TRE-RJ this Wednesday.

In ordinary justice, the former military policeman is the target of two lawsuits filed by the Public Ministry. In April, he was charged with filming sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl. In June, for sexual harassment and sexual harassment.
