Trump: Independent expert to review seized records – ‘Buying time’ thanks to judge he appointed

The noose of American justice may tighten around him Donald Trumpafter the thousands of secrets archives that were found in his house, but thanks to one judge which he had appointed, buys time against the prosecuting authorities.

Specifically, the federal court in West Palm Beach decided to appoint an independent expert to review the seized records. Nevertheless, the judge Eileen Cannon appointed to the post by Trump in 2020, just months before his term was to end, partially vindicated the former president.

Thus, he announced that the court decided to appoint the expert to examine any personal belongings, documents and other material subject to legal privilege.

With this decision, police officers and prosecutors are temporarily prohibited from using this material in the context of the criminal investigation they are conducting. But they can examine the documents “for classification purposes and assessment of national security”.

Cannon’s decision is seen as a victory for Trump and a major setback for the Justice Department, which had opposed appointing a third, independent party to the case because it could impede investigators’ access to the documents and “harm government interests, including those concerning national security”.
