Serdar Berdymukhamedov, the son of Turkmen President Kurbanguli Berdymukhamedov, has confirmed that he will run to replace his father in the March 12 presidential election, the Turkmen news agency reported today.
Berdymukhamedov, the 64-year-old president, announced at the weekend that he was calling early elections. He said he would not run for office after 15 years in power and wanted to give the new generation a chance to take power.
His 40-year-old son, who is currently the country’s deputy prime minister, is expected to succeed his father as president of the gas-rich Central Asian country.
