Two Royal Norwegian Air Force F-35A fighter jets land on highway

Two fighter jets Lockheed Martin’s F-35As landed for the first time in highway – as seen in Norwegian military footage – which allows them to reduce, in wartime, the time they are vulnerablea staying on the ground. The two aircraft of the Royal Norwegian Air Force landed in Tervo in central Finland yesterday, Thursday, at noon as part of a military exercise.

Immediately after landing, they were refueled without shutting down the engines, the Norwegian military said, and the planes then took off again. “Fighter aircraft are vulnerable on the ground, so by being able to use small military airfields – and for that matter highways— increasing their survivability in wartime,” Royal Norwegian Air Force Lt. Gen. Rolf Folland said in a statement.

Finland, which joined NATO in April, shares a 1,300-kilometer border with Russia. Norway is a founding member of the Alliance. Another type of F-35, the F-35B, which can take off vertically, has previously landed on roads. This was a first for his particular model F-35, which cannot take off vertically. F-16s can also land on a road.

Finland plans to buy 64 F-35 fighter jets from Lockheed Martin.
