Ukraine: More than 6 million internally displaced due to the war

More than six million Ukrainians have been displaced since the start of the Russian invasion, according to a new United Nations count.

To these must be added the 5.2 million Ukrainians who have fled the country and been registered as refugees in other European countries since 24 February.

As of June 23, the internally displaced Ukrainians numbered more than 6.2 million, according to the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM). This is the lowest number of displaced people since February 24. At the beginning of May they amounted to 8 million.

According to the IOM, more than 5.5 million Ukrainians who had originally gone abroad or to other parts of Ukraine have now returned home. The agency notes that displaced persons or refugees often need immediate access to medicines and assistance to rebuild their damaged homes.

64% of the displaced are women.

About 61% of the displaced come from eastern Ukraine, where the fiercest fighting is taking place, 15% from the north, 11% from Kyiv and 11% from the south of the country.

The most significant population movements are observed within the eastern regions, to a lesser extent, from the east to central and southern Ukraine.

44% of the displaced live in houses they rent themselves, 29% are hosted by relatives.

Only 13% say they feel safe in the area where they are, while 63% still feel insecure.

Of those displaced, 15% say they want to return home within the next two weeks.

According to the IOM, about a quarter of Ukrainians have stopped taking their medication since the war broke out because they could no longer find it or it was too expensive.

In 20% of displaced families there are children aged 1-4 years, in 51% elderly and in 36% people suffering from chronic diseases.

Only 12% of those who have returned home are considering leaving again.

This was the sixth count of people displaced by the war, and was done by telephone, in a random sample of 2,000 people over the age of 18.
