Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview broadcast on Sunday that Ukraine had received sophisticated air defense systems from the United States.

It is the first recognition that Ukraine has received the National Advanced Ground-Air Missile System, long requested by Kiev and whose shipment was approved by Washington in August.

“We absolutely need the United States to show leadership and give Ukraine air defense systems. I want to thank President (Joe) Biden for a positive decision that was made,” Zelensky said.

“But believe me, it’s not nearly enough to cover civilian infrastructure, schools, hospitals, universities and Ukrainian homes.”

Zelensky also thanked the US for other multiple rocket launch systems that allowed Ukraine to advance against Russian forces.

Ukraine has been carrying out counteroffensives this month to free large swaths of territory in northeastern Kharkiv from occupation, and has also made advances in the south.
