“THE Putin will fail, Europe and our values will prevail,” said the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen during her speech on the State of the Union which she addressed today to the Plenary of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Dressed with colors of the flag of Ukrainein a yellow jacket and blue blouse, Ursula von der Leyen began her speech by referring to the “brutal” war of Russia against Ukraine, saying that it is not just a war against Ukraine, but a war waged by Russia against our common future and a confrontation between autocracy and democracy.
“The EU’s solidarity with Ukraine remains unwavering,” added von der Leyen, noting that since the first day of the war the EU has stood by that country with weapons, with funds, showing hospitality to refugees, but also with the strictest sanctions against Russia ever imposed.
Von der Leyen stressed that a large share of the Russian economy has been cut off from financial markets, while Russian industry is in disarray. He also emphasized that the Kremlin is the one that brought the Russian economy to the level of destruction and added: “our sanctions will remain, we will show determination and not a willingness to compromise.”
“Today courage has a name. That name is Ukraine. Courage has one face: the men and women resisting the Russian invasion,” said the President of the European Commission.
Alongside congratulated the first lady of Ukraine Olena Zelensky, who was present at the Plenary of the European Parliament, for her and her husband’s courage in inspiring an entire people. “You gave your people a voice on the world stage and gave hope to all of us. Long live Ukraine!”, stressed Ursula von der Leyen.
Continuing, he emphasized that the EU’s financial support to Ukraine will continue. As he said, the EU will give 100 million euros to help rebuild schools in Ukraine, while he stressed that the Commission will work to get Ukraine immediate access to the EU’s single market. He also announced that he will travel to Kyiv tomorrow to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Among the proposals presented by Ursula von der Leyen, in the Plenary Session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, are the ceiling on the surplus revenues of power generation companies, which will generate 140 billion euros.
