The United States intelligence service identified that a false video denouncing alleged electoral fraud in Arizona was made by Russians and propagated by a “fake news factory” – or “troll factory”, it also became known. This mechanism was used during the 2016 United States presidential election.
According to investigations, Russian influence actors “fabricated and amplified a recent video that falsely portrayed an interview with an individual alleging voter fraud in Arizona, which involved the creation of fake foreign ballots and the alteration of voter lists to favor the vice president.” Kamala Harris,” the FBI said.
The video was created and propagated by the Foundation to Battle Injustice, known as R-FBI. The group, which calls itself a “human rights” organization, was the focus of an investigation by CNN published last week about Russian efforts to sow disinformation about the US electoral process.
The staged video was shared on X by R-FBI chief Mira Terada and appears to have been viewed at least 236,000 times before being removed.
It shows Terada conducting a fake interview with an alleged whistleblower who is described as “a former aide” to Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes. The individual — whose face is blurred and whose voice appears to be generated by AI, according to deepfake detection tool TrueMedia — alleges voter fraud in Arizona.
THE CNN reached out to the R-FBI and Terada for comment but did not hear back.
The investigation of CNN with researchers at Clemson University’s Media Forensics Hub discovered that the R-FBI has ties to a Russian disinformation network known as Storm-1516, which has increasingly targeted the 2024 US presidential election.
Terada’s X account was shown as suspended on Monday night. THE CNN contacted X for comment and is awaiting comment.
