A six-year-old student shot and wounded a teacher at Richneck Elementary School of the city of Newport News, Virginia of USA. The teacher, in her 30s, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, local police Chief Steve Drew said.
It remains unclear how the gun was found in the 6-year-old’s possession. Police described the incident as a “fight” in a first-grade classroom at the elementary school where the shooting occurred. “It wasn’t an accidental shooting,” Drew stressed. “I want to know where that gun came from,” added the Newport News police chief.
The six-year-old student is in custody.
The students at the school were taken to a gym and are being attended to by their parents and social workers, Drew said, adding that no other injuries were reported.
Newport News Mayor Philip Jones has assured a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident will follow and steps will be taken to ensure this never happens again in the community.
“shocked” and “disappointed” said superintendent of education George Parker. “We need our community’s support to make sure kids don’t have access to guns”he said at a press conference.
Gun violence in schools is a scourge in the United States. In May, a teenager killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.
